Why freebies?

Ok- I'm allowed one serious post a month- LOL, And honestly it's all because I'm scared of "that wet noodle Jazz"- hahahaha. Ok, Jazz my dear friend and CT team leader left this comment on my blog and left it with a "threat"-LOL, so I am going to do what she say's- as there is something that "I want to discuss" that matches the topic Jazz has brought up.

jazzieal has left a new comment on your post "Here is comes-":
I am so ticked off and if you dont post this in your blog Im gonna clobber you with you a wet noodle!!I may not always comment here but when I download a freebie I always say thanks..I was just there getting my cluster and 503 ppl downloaded that freebie and ONLY 85...do you hear me people..ONLY 85..said thank you...Kim is my very special friend..and I have to blow her horn for her cause she won't..she loves what she does..she has a God given talent for being creative and for making beautiful things..she has an eye for design and detail that not many have..she works long and hard to make these beautiful things for us..face it..if it weren't for freebies..a lot of us wouldn't have new things to work with..it takes like 5 seconds to type TY if you can't spare more..it takes Kim maybe 5 hrs or more to make some of her freebies..I think if it were me I would say to heck with it..take my freebies and put them in my store and sell them...I'm sure it is the same with other designers who give you freebies..so if you are going to take the time to grab them up take the time to say a simple..thanks..Ok..I have a lot more I could say but this much makes me feel better..SAY THANKS AND GIVE BACK A LITTLE FOR A LOT YOU TAKE..remember this when you click your way thru freebie land!!!!

Now I know I've had this discussion before ( Yeah- my "blip" on the radar-LOL) and to be honest I have really come to terms with it.. ( amount of comments to downloads.) But what I haven't are the mails some of my fellow DSO designers have had about the FREEBIE WAR ( which I promise- has lifted spirits , broken "designer blocks" and brought a team closer together!) about WHY we are doing this and that it's just for MONEY!! Hell, if we wanted to make money we wouldn't give out freebies! Imagine NO FREEBIES at all from ANY designer? Yes there would be a BIG raise in sales, and a big rise in PIRACY too ( which I DETEST!) If you would like to read up on the WHOLE story please visit Lexi's blog .

And that brings me to why I do it-

1- I'm new in this HUGE digital designing land!! And I know that I don't buy products from someone if I don't know their "standards or quality"- ( this is me remember - I'm fussy LOL) so the only way I get to know a designers work is by "trying before I buy"- hence the freebie!

2- Most times the freebie you get is the result of me "playing" and learning and with that comes new ideas and that in turn makes for a new kit... etc etc etc! But MOST of ALL-It's because when I started digi and fell in LOVE with it- it was designers like us that "gave away freebies" that helped me "grow and learn" and have things to use before I thought I was GOOD enough to go and spend money on my hobby!

3-and to get your feedback- you are the ones that are going to use it and well those comments that say _ I LOVE the colours on this, or I loved that flower- etc etc gives me the confidence in what I am making!

4- Well because I love too!

Phew- if you have read through all that -KUDO's to you! LOL- but I had to stand up for my "fellow designers" and I THANK ALL OF YOU that take the few seconds to leave me a comment! I love you guys!!!!! I've made some AWESOME friends through my "little" blog and my "learning and designing" and well I just want to say -I wouldn't have met ANY of you if it hadn't been for all those FREEBIES out there that got me started. AND GUESS WHAT- LOL

Yup here is one that I have been trying the last couple of day's- STITCHING!

I've been trying out different "effects and textures" ect ect and on how to make them from scratch!-( thanks to a tutorial by Bunny) and added a "Kim" touch of course..LOL... And as I "aptly" named it (excuse the pun- LOL LOL) 'So Who' is going to tell me if they are OK and if they like them-LOL

.. actually if you found this freebie from Ikea, Amy, Silvia, Vicky or any other freebie"finder"- rather today say THANK YOU to them! They spend HOURS making your day of searching quicker ( they do mine!) and yet the get so few "Ta's"- so that is the deal today! LOL http://www.4shared.com/file/18265144/392a033f/So_Who.html Ok that's the "serious" posting out of the way for the month-LOL. But I hope you will all understand that it had to be said- especially if you have read Lexi's blog... I love my "fellow designers" and I hate it when they are "mowed down" for doing GOOD! Hugs and Loves Kim

Ok so first off, maybe I'm dense, or maybe I missed a post somewhere or something, who knows. But I read Lexi's blog and I had no idea that DSO did all that fun stuff!! I LOVE challenges!!! I'm heading over there this afternoon!

Secondly, ppl stink. End of story. For every jerk that doesn't comment or sends a comment of anger, there are 50 of us nice girls (and guys? :oP) who love and appreciate all that you freebie designers do. And I'm sure I'll appreciate it even more when I try my hand at it myself, lol.

So 3 cheers to freebie givers!
Hip hip hooray!

Thanks Kim - these stithes look great. Thanks for making feebies available - it still spins me out that someone can make something in one part of the world, and then give that to strangers in many other parts of the world... it is an amazing thing - very generous, and really makes the digiscrap community a community.

I want to thank you for any and all freebies that I have found here. I do appreciate all your hard work and talent and for your sharing them with all of us. I just have to get my nerve up and try PSP and make some freebies too. So bigs hugs and many thanks Kim for all you do, P :-)

I have to say that I hate the fact that so many people take freebies, and don't bother commenting too. Another problem I have is people not reading a post, and then complaining because they can't find something, or figure something out, when the answer was in the post. Just ticks me off! LOL Because then I have to take time away from things I do, to answer them. And yeah, I'm not truely a designer, I just play with making things now and then, but I still am busy doing other things, and having to answer questions, I have already answered in the very post that has the freebie, gets old. LOL anyway, thanks for lecturing people, even if they don't actually read it! And thanks for your freebies!!

I totally agree with jazzieal's comment. It just takes a few seconds to say thank you and it doesn't hurt.
So thank you very much for your freebies. See it didn't hurt.
Have a nice day!

Thanks so much for sharing. I totally agree with the whole post and it makes me mad that so few people take the time to say a quick "thank" for all the amazing and free stuff that they get. I really appreciate all the freebies as they have allowed me to play with this new hobby and learn how fun it is! Thanks so much!

Love the stiches... thank you for sharing.

The whole comment to download ratio has a lot to do with the jerks who send the links through email groups. So everyone and their brother run on over and DL and don't take the time to get to know the designers and such.

The jerk who was all OMG over freebies and you ladies out for miney - she needs to get off her ass and stop lurking around blogs to get freebies if she has such an issue.

I am not a "designer" although I have made some kits and gave them away... I started making "templates" for my layouts before I had even heard the word "template"... I started my blog before i started giving away my templates as freebies... then stopped blogging until I decided that templates were so popular I would give them away just to help others with their layouts.... All I asked was not to share them through Yahoo or any other groups, and to leave some comments...

You would not believe the nasty comments I got for asking for comments... you would not believe the comments I got that made it sound like I owed someone something... THEN when I put my blog on moderated comments I got even nastier comments... was told I needed to be MORE GIVING... LET ME TELL YOU THAT REALLY TICKED ME OFF!
I do NOT SELL ANYWHERE... thought I have been told I should... I do this for NOTHING... a "TY" or "thanks" is NOT that much to ask!
Well I started a yahoo group to share my templates and some got really mad at me... it is a small group but I can control who gets the templates better... went from 800 downloads to under 100.... and still very few comments from the members compared to the downloads but the fact that I have some who leave comments EVERY TIME they download is what keeps me sharing...

REALLY funny how people act like those who give out freebies owes everyone something!

BTW... found your blog a little while ago and subscribed to it... don't download many freebies because I have more than I will ever use but I sure love to read every blog I subscribe to. And I just want to say HANG IN THERE!

Sorry for the book but I wanted you to know that you are NOT alone!

OMG I am so sorry so many people just take without letting a few words, at least to say TY... I am French and English is not that easy for me to be clear, so most of the time I only say, "TY for sharing", or "this is beautiful I love it", I would love to tell something else, for example about shapes or colors or special effects, but I have not the words for that... but a little TY is even better than a big nothing, I hope, at least... Without you and many other generous and talented ladys, we would have *nothing* to scrap with, even if I bought / buy digi stuff, because I love digiscrapping and want to give my money LOL !! Well... **Thank you** a bunch for sharing this "stitching" (I've tried to make my own but I am totally null with that ^^) and all the other previous ones...

I actually came via the poster above me, Hilmarose through her yahoo group. I normally come via Ikea. You have a fun blog and wonderful freebies and for a newbie like me they are a great thing...love them.
I also saw your layout in godesigndigitals gallery. [DD tried your template.]

I for one...am GLAD you posted all of that! It makes me so sad to see the comments to DL ratio :(
Freebies are what got me started!

And...I know you said that most of your freebies are "practice" but I know what you did for me!
For those of you that read the comments~
I asked Kim about bluebells so I had some to put in my memorial book I'm making for my stillborn daughter "Belle" not only did she make a beautiful bluebell, but a WHOLE KIT! Out of the goodness of her heart! She created this for Free, and gave it to me and everyone that visits her blog! How amazing and sweet is that? There are not enough good people in the world like her! So PLEASE give her and the other sweet, generous designers out there that work long hrs sharing their talent with us a Big THANK YOU and lots of ~HUGS~
One of the reasons I got so addicted to digi scrapping is because of the AWESOME ladies in the digi scrap community!
You designers ROCK!!!!!!!!
Ok, I guess it's "vent" day :)

And, Kim~ Love the stitching! Looks like your a pro!
Thanks for sharing, and all that you do. Hip Hip Hooray!!!

~Much Love~

I wish everyone who took, would also give....but alas..some in this world are just "takers". It's wrong, but never doubt that they will "reap what they sow". that's how life is...they'll get theirs...or not get it, as the case may be. I'm so glad you are kind to us all, your goodness is evident in all your creations. thanks for these lovely stitches. I enjoy your blog.

Thank you for the stitching. I left a comment at 4Share, but didn't know if you preferred to have it there or here, so I did both.

TFS - love the stitches. I have to confess that I sometimes do a drive by "snag" - to other designers, never Kim! - but that is because many designers have their comments section set to only allow bloggers to comment - what is a newbie like me to do if they don't allow "other" comments???

These stitches look so cool. I like when things are just a little less then perfect since I know if I was doing it myself it would have flaws.

Eish, this is sad. I discovered Kim through a yahoo group, but via a very responsible person that pointed to the blog and not just a download link. Once I got to the blog I saw the most amazing freebie - African Sunsets and when I went to download it I discovered that Kim's a fellow South African. Being the shy, retiring type (LOL) I immediately sent her an e-mail to thank her, compliment her and introduce myself.

This little step has led to a whole bunch of things. The "Stitch in Time" freebie designed just for me. Me becoming a member of Kim's creative team, but more than anything else, I have made a FRIEND. I've never met Kim, although we live in the same country we are still many hundreds of miles apart, but I know if I had to get the opportunity to meet her tomorrow, I'd grab it with both hands.

And yes ladies, you may not see me say thank you here or on the download link, but I do send e-mails. I'm a graphic designer but I can tell you I don't have the patience to sit for hours designing all the beautiful things that Kim sends our way for free.

Our designers should be cherished and their few requests should be respected. It takes a few ungrateful sods to break someone's spirit and those of us that are truely grateful will be the losers in the long run.

Kim, keep up the good work, there may be less that are truely grateful, but remember we are the one's that will hit the others up the back of the head if we can lay our hands on them.

Stunning stitches.

I'm still waiting for my "Official Kim B Supporter" badge. LOL

Thank you for the great stitches! I was a paper scrapper for a long time...then one day about a year ago was surfing the web and ran across Amy Watson's blog and thought WOW, I have got to try this! So, I started following the links on her blog and found all of these wonderful designers. I was soon hooked on digi! It was the wonderful talent and generosity of ladies like you that opened up a whole new world for me. I still cannot design my own stuff (though trying using PSP), so I am very thankful for every thing that you and other designers share. Your freebies feed the addiction! LOL! I love to read your blog and visit everyday. Thanks again Kim!

Ok I'll admit I havent said thanks here everyday since I've only popped in to read a bit & see what you offered. But Im saying thanks now because I've been searching all day for stitches & I came to read the freebie wars & look what I found! LOL you're a life saver a nice grape flavored one lol. I really appreciate all that designers do & love the ones who give freebies or make their designs affordable. Even if I don't take what's offered I still say thanks for all those I know who take the freebie & won't say thanks. I used to think people didn't say thanks cuz of a language barrier but I was just making excuses for rude people, because I couldn't believe someone wouldn't say thanks. But after looking at blogs in more languages than I can count I realize thanks & freebie looks the same all over & everyone can at least type TY on their keyboard. So long thanks short... THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!

I Love your venture into stitches. Looks like you're mastering them just fine. Thanks for sharing these. And I'm sorry that I don't thank you for each and every one of your freebies. My BAD, for sure. But, know that I appreciate each and every one of them.

Inma said...

The issue about the comments and the ratio so low, compared with the downloads is general around the blogs I visit. I tried to always leave at least a Thank you note in all of them, because I truly appreciate reading the blog and the download. Or sometimes it's just the blog, reading it.

But I do have to recognise that I do not always have too much to say and just leave a "Thanks" that considering the effort put in blog and or the freebie, I know it's not too much.

In any case I must say that I truly appreciate your freebies, not only because they are free but because they are beautifully designed, and actually is great fun to come around to read for a while. I find the time I'm Internet reading blogs and other stuff quite relaxing, and in here I can choose what exactly I read and do during the time. :)

Thanks a million for the stitches as well, they have a nicely undone feeling. :)

Best wishes. :o)

Sweet zigs Thank you for sharing.

I try to always leave a comment when I download a freebie. But I also have a question. Does anyone know if I try to download and it times out or jumps to an error page, does it count as a download. The last 2 days I haven't been able to download from 4 shared. I bet I've clicked to download each site 5 or more times stretched over 48 hours.... I sure hope it doesn't show up because that would add more none comments... I don't want to leave a comment about...I can't download for the 4th time.

Anyway....Thank you for sharing your talent and art. I feel so good that those with talent share with those that don't have any..lol... that's me....

I try to give thanks whenever I download. I confess that when I'm trying to get those freebies that are only up for 24 hours & my husband is honking in the driveway that I might click & run. I enjoy tracking down freebies as much to read the posts & feel like I'm coming to know that designer a little bit. You become attached to them. I'm a hybrid scrapper so I love to find products by "digital" designers in my local scrapbook store. I want to thank you for teaching "freebie" etiquette, sharing tutorials & your life, and for giving us an insight into the designing world.

And then there's days that I get the biggest thank yous that just make me all warm and fuzzy inside! There's good and bad in everything, and always will be. We just have to focus on the good and say blow me to the bad! LOL. Oops did I say that? I guess I did. LOL. Oh well. :)
Well, I guess I've said enough, so I'm going to run. Hee hee.
I love these stitches, you have done an awesome job sweetie!! Better then I've been able to do! LOL. You go girlie! :)

I definitely appreciate your gorgeous freebies! You absolutely have one of my fav blogs. So THANK YOU!!! I have lots of freebies on my blog too now and being new to this I felt very sad to see over 300 downloads for some items and no comments. Initially I was quite devastated because as you say, it takes hours to make these and I'd be happy if only 5% of downloaders said thanks. But I have to admit that I don't always say thanks for the freebies I download either. And that isn't because I don't appreciate it - it's simply that I have limited time. ikeagoddess.blogspot.com yesterday only posted a few freebies because she wanted to have a relaxing evening - I'm sure that's an unusual thing for her because she works and then spends ALL this time finding things for us all. And most people would understand how she feels. She simply doesn't have enough spare time. None of us do. You now have 58 comments here (if no-one else is typing right now) which I'd say is a lot. Would you actually have the time to read 500+ comments? I sure don't. If I got that many I'd be even more torn because I couldn't answer them all. If I got 5% of downloaders leaving comments I'd be thrilled to bits. My most recent comment was "This alpha is really cute. I have never seen one made even close to how you have done this one. You get an A+. Thank you so much. This will be so much fun to scrap with" which is worth about 50 other comments! It made me feel like I wasn't wasting my time. But I couldn't read 300+ comments every day... so after reading the comment I feel really torn now being on both sides of the fence! :-(

Maria said...

OMG I just read Hilmarose's comment! That's shocking! I can't believe people can even begin to think it is in any way appropriate to leave negative comments when someone is going generous!! I would be absolutely devastated!

I'm a mother of two and a half.. ( point five is due in September!) living in California, and a housewife to boot.

Right now, money is something that is very tight for us, and I see so many kits that I love and just cannot buy. I can't.. I won't take from my kids just so I can have something.

Without these freebies, I'd never be able to scrap and make the gorgeous pages I have. I can't even tell you how much I just want to cry when someone offers up such a beautiful kit or item free for us to have. It's so amazing, and allows people like me to still do something we love without being stressed about what we lost to do it.

I always make a point to say even just "thank you!!" any time I snag a link.. I do it while I'm waiting for the download to finish! :D I want to encourage the amazing gifts we get. I just wish others would do the same so that like you said, we keep getting them and don't suddenly find that the freebies are gone.

Those type of people will ruin it for us that truly appreciate what you guys do.

I wholeheartedly agree with your recent blog post. It's a shame that people can't say thank you! Goodness even if they just put thanks in the blog - it would be something! It's almost as if they are stealing! Why not say thank you for something free? Hard work and all. The feedback we give you is fun for us too - to know that you read it is fabulous! I love everything and have totally loved this war - I didn't know about a lot of this stuff till just recently and I immediately started "snagging" but most definitely commenting too! And I never share the links - only to the blog if someone asks me where I got something - I think it is downright rude to not give the link to the blog or to whatever site you got it from -not the zipped file site! Thanks sweet lady for all that you do for me and for others - I treasure each and every piece you and the other great designers gift away.

I seriously wonder how some people were raised!! Did they never learn manners? I also went and read Lexi's post, and I can't believe people say the things they do!!! The sad part is that I know they do really say them though!
I would never be able to scrap if it wasn't for wonderful designers who give away freebies. I am disabled & unemployed, and live with family members. I can't paper scrap any longer due to the cost, and digi scrapping is my saving grace. I can't imagine not saying thank you to someone who is giving something to you, no strings attached, let alone turning around and being rude to them!!!! It is just beyond me.
I just want you and other designers to know how much you are appreciated, and how many people you really help!! You guys are a saving grace to me, and I don't know what I would do otherwise. THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart for what you do!!

Thanks for your stitching - but if you learn to fasten the ends of your thread, it won't come loose like that. Just thought you might want to know. If you will send "Wayne" and me a plane ticket, I'll be happy to come over and show you how. It will be my FREEBIE to you. Sound like a deal? I probably shouldn't say any thing, but I wrote the comment that Maria is referring to. Reading how she felt about my comment, made me feel as good as she did. You never know when some little thing you do is going to make an impression - good or bad.

All you freebie givers make me want to scrap AND learn how to do what you do...you are inspiring to me. Right now I have 3 kids under the age of 4 and would like another to make it a complete foursome....which means that I may never see the light into the designing world for another 6 or 7 years at best. So thanks for the beautiful work you do and most of all for the sweetness of sharing it with the rest of us who love your work.

Thanks for the nice stitching.

It stinks not everyone can take a small moment of their time to say thanks but they can take time to click a download link =(

I always make sure to comment and usually both places 4 shared and the blog and the freebie site. I now how much work goes into the kits. I often get so sad to see how few comments and how many dl there are but cant do much about it. I am just thankful that you still give us freebies at all. In the psp taggers world artists everday who once allowed taggers to use their art freely have begun to go pay to use and provide only packages of tubes for sale in say 6 or 12 at certain rates becasue people refused to simply give them credit it seems many of those ungrateful type taggers have now simply moved to the digi scrap world ive seen many digi scrap kits in tags and its probably many of those same people unfortunately that will cause freebies to disappear thankfully i can make my own if need be (it will take forever but i can)but those who cant will suffer for their greed and not being thankful..
Thanks again
Belinda
